Rockford Offers Many Growing Industries

As Rockford was being established in the mid-1800s, it began to be known as a manufacturing town. At the turn of the century, industry and immigration had caused the city to grow dramatically. A large influx of Swedes to the area created a market of handcrafted furniture, and the city’s good location (along with the arrival of the railroad) made it a hub for manufacturing just about anything.

There are more than 10,000 businesses in the Rockford area. This creates jobs in many areas, such as banking and finance which accounts for roughly 5% of the employment for Rockford and the metro area. This section of industry includes insurance as well.

A local medical school may help contribute to that statistic, but with some industries becoming uncertain, this has become an area that is starting to thrive. People are working more and more as teachers and administrators in not only public or private school for kids under 18, but in one of the city’s colleges. Other jobs in this area include technical training, adult education, and career enhancement training. The city has very innovative programs and state-of-the-art facilities.

At the end of the day, Rockford maintains its roots in manufacturing. Even with the economy’s problem today, Rockford, Illinois, jobs can be found in one of 1,400 companies located in the three county area of Winnebago, Boone and Ogle. Of those companies manufacturing goods, 120 of them keep their headquarters in Rockford. It’s an inexpensive place to do business, and there are a large number of people trained in this area and able to work.

Although Rockford is not a large city, it is a growing metropolis and this is creating more and more jobs in the area every day.
