Event Details

The luncheon will honor the memory of the late Ruth Fairchild and benefit her beloved Roots & Wings Program, led by Angelic Organics Learning Center in partnership with Zion Outreach, the Rockford Housing Authority and residents of Blackhawk Courts.
Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara will deliver the keynote address, where he’ll be touching on food insecurity and what agencies are doing to address some of the region’s hunger-related issues.

    • Roots & Wings is a youth leadership and urban agriculture program based at an organic farm on the grounds of Rockford Housing Authority’s Blackhawk Courts public housing property. With tiered programs and events for people ages 5 to 105, there are opportunities for everyone to be involved and gain skills through Roots & Wings - from cooking and harvesting, to marketing and leadership. Offerings include weekly Youth Leaders sessions for pre-teens, job training apprenticeship program for youth and adults, and community events open to all families and neighbors. Apprentices run the farm business, growing food and selling it to the Rockford community, which generates jobs and wealth, and increases access to fresh fruits and vegetables in a neighborhood that otherwise lacks healthy options. Each season, approximately one dozen apprentices and youth leaders grow 3,000 lbs. of produce, and help organize educational community events for nearly 100 Blackhawk Courts residents. Roots & Wings is led by Angelic Organics Learning Center in partnership with Zion Outreach, the Rockford Housing Authority, and the residents of Blackhawk Courts.

Roots & Wings is a program of Angelic Organics Learning Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational partner to Agelic Organics CSA Farm.
