This historic 1914 building, originally known as Hotel Mertens, is an eight-story structure which Rockford renovated and now contains a blend of co-working space, private offices, various commercial tenants, as well as event space. Its most recent renovation included the main floor which houses a restaurant showcasing the historic aspects and fixtures of the building.
There was little to no room for staging this overall building transformation as this project is on an active downtown corner surrounded by numerous restaurants and businesses. The project also required the removal of major earth retention systems, a tower crane during the City’s largest tourist attraction, ArtPrize, and mobile scaffolding. Rockford worked to ensure that the project was completed with as little inconvenience as possible to local residents and businesses, and under safe conditions for both workers and pedestrians.
